Lucifer

When the charismatic Lord of Hell abandons his kingdom for the beauty that is Los Angeles to have a little fun turning mere mortals into his personal playthings, things are bound to get complicated. Lucifer (Tom Ellis), an angel cast out of Heaven and condemned to rule Hell, has decided to take a vacation which he’s using to work as a civilian consultant to the Los Angeles Police Department with Chloe Decker (Lauren German) – LAPD Homicidal Detective. How often do you see the Devil himself solve a new, bizarre criminal case? From biker gangs to jealousy to revenge, name it and you have it all here.

This show gives fresh new comedic and supernatural twist to the mundane crime genre. Lucifer may not be a consultant with a degree but he sure as hell (pun intended) can find the killer with his weird yet hysterical tactics compelling the audience to come back for more. Lucifer’s absence from Hell sure did concern a few people, particularly faithful minion Maze and suave angel Amenadiel who wants Lucifer back in the Underworld for obvious reasons. This creates a diversion for the show’s plot line and brings to light the directorial expertise with which all the loose threads converge together into one major story line.

Season 1 ended with a mind blowing finale which did not compromise on the drama or the action, concluding with a major cliff-hanger- leaving the viewers in shock and with innumerable questions in mind.

Overall, this dark but charming series uses loosely veiled biblical references, crime, and tongue-in-cheek humour to create a fictional world that blurs the line between good and evil. Tom Ellis’ portrayal of the arrogant antihero, who claims that he’s largely misunderstood, is both captivating and troubling enough to make him and the show extremely likable.
