The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

Movie: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Cast: Rooney Mara, Daniel Craig

Rating: 4/5

The movie starts with a brief prologue, zany opening credits and a creepy cover of Zeppelin’s ‘Immigrant Song’ and right from the beginning we are in for a wild ride; Stieg Larsson’s famous novel “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” is brought to life on screen.

Scorned journalist from a leftwing magazine, Mikael Blomkvist (played by Daniel Craig) is called upon by a wealthy business tycoon Henrik Vanger (Christopher Plummer) to find out the truth about a much loved grand-niece who suddenly disappeared as a teenager 40 years earlier. Mikeal turns to Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara), a punk gothic computer hacker whose violent activities have made her a word of the state, for help. The film is shot in Stockholm and the characters speak in informal English with a slight Swedish inflection.

I walked into this movie not knowing anything about the novel or the Swedish version that was made before; however, the end result was satisfying, brutal and complex thanks to the great direction by Fincher and of course the character inputs. The mystery surrounding the film is complex and white- knuckling and adds to the intense mood of the story and strong character performances. Until the last half hour of the film, I didn’t know of the niece’s killer, or if she was really dead, but the twist left me blown away.

Ultimately, it’s a great entertaining movie and I’d definitely recommend it. The only downside, in my opinion, is that it’s lengthy and quite intense for a stressful work day. But on a lazy Sunday when you have little to do, this might be a perfect pick!
