The Beautiful Game

Once again, the FIFA World Cup has been blatantly implausible. Yet again, it has just not been the World cup of the aggressively energetic professional players but has also been the cup of the people, of the magnificent, impressive spectators and fans all around the globe who go bonkers over this glorious and immensely prestigious cup.

This world cup has been way different, in the presence of some supreme footballing nations, the underdogs have stolen the thunder and now with the spotlight being on them after their valiant performances they have more on stake. This time the contest is more striking and competitive. THERE ARE NO FAVOURITES…

The twelfth man, off the field are the most crucial to the team’s success. These people are filled with dedication, passion and thirst, they carry a fire within themselves to cheer and support their national teams in come what may situations. Football fandom is seen as a rite of passage involving a process akin to apprenticeship. The roar of the enthusiastic and exhilarated crowd is a better drug to many. The rush of a goal, heroics of the acrobatic keeper, the spirit of the game – that’s heaven right there. So, during every game they pull on their jersey, hang onto their superstitions and hook up to their hope and belief and they are ready for all of it, pumped up with excitement and aggression. It is not a game it is their life. Currently and even earlier in history, many losses have been encountered due to the inability to accept the outcome of a match.

Argentinian fan who dropped his body

‘Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside us while we live.’ – Norman Cousins.

Dinu Alex, 30, had gone missing from his house in Kerala on June 22, a day after Argentina was thrashed horribly by Croatia, score line being three goals to nil in the favour of the European nation, in their encounter in the group stages of the ongoing FIFA World Cup. The Argentinian fan, who vastly followed the South American side’s talisman, Lionel Messi, has allegedly committed suicide after a note was found saying ‘Nothing is left in this world for me to see. I am leaving for the depth of dead…’ It is certainly discernible about Dinu, that for him Messi and his footballing nation was extremely important to him, and he considered it to be the greatest loss, a loss bigger than his own death.

These are the greatest of the fans who do not only compare this great sport with life and death but stand firm on their words and are completely loyal, devoted and moreover patriotic towards their favourite teams.

Millions of decayed hearts

“PASS, PASS, PASS, FAIL” The elimination of the greatest of the sides corresponding to Argentina, Portugal and Spain in the foremost round of knockout stages itself came down heavily on their fans. They were left heartbroken, feeling miserable and dejected. The worst of all was the deletion of the four-time world cup champions Germany from the list after they failed to qualify. Their fans experienced humiliation and extreme criticism. The supporters of these glorious and triumphant nations wept for days as their heads hung low in disbelief. The gloom settled in them as their wait to see their favourites players lift the cup, came to an end together with some of the legends said goodbye to their careers announcing their retirement. For them the heartache was like an insatiable fire that refused to vanquish, while burnt all the oxygen in the body leaving them empty.

Act of man: Annihilation

It was a football result that ‘shocked’ the world and the act of the million that ‘shook’ the world – apparently moved the earth. Mexicans jumping for joy at their country’s surprise world cup victory over defending champions Germany shook the ground so hard they sent off earthquake detectors buzzing. The super sensitive seismographs registered tremors in two cities of Mexico, a couple of seconds after the single, winning goal scored for the North American underdogs. The victory sparked mass jubilation and euphoria spread across the American nation like a herculean cloud pouring ecstasy. It was a moment to rejoice. Every emotion was fleeting, every thought gave way to new one, as their hopes rose and now they stood strong as a serious threat to the opposing team.
