Article 15: An Extraordinary Film on Ground zero value Conflict

As expected from all the buzz, Movie “Article 15” was another feather in the hat of Ayushmann Khurranna after consistent hits like Andhadhun and Badhai Ho.

With a simple but bold storyline, the movie is based on the Article 15 of the Indian Constitution which states that the state shall not discriminate against any citizen on grounds only of caste, religion, sex, race and place of birth.

The story follows along the protagonist , IPS officer, Ayan Ranjan (Ayushmann Khurranna) who is given charge of a small village, Laalgaon in Uttar Pradesh who finds the foundations of caste discrimination buried deep in the whole region to be very vague. Similarly, he narrates his concerns to his wife (Isha Talwar), an activist living in Delhi, who motivates him to solve the case involving those who are at the lowest margin of the society.

The plot revolves around the rape and murder case of two Dalit (lower caste) girls in the rural trails of the village. The case is habitually ignored by the local police due to the fact that the girls belonged to the lower caste. However, Ayan’s determination and the will to solve the case throws light on the lesser known Article 15 of our constitution and introduces it to the people of Laalgaon.

The conflicting ideologies of the erstwhile officers and Ayan were depicted very realistically throughout the movie.  It’s one of the movies without any gaudy action sequences despite the hero being a police officer and fighting for justice. This gives the movie the edge of realism.

Aayushmann Khurranna movie without humour is impossible hence the script contains some savage comebacks from the hero himself that breaks the monotony and the glim atmosphere. Moments like these stand out throughput the movie.

Apart from the powerful storyline, credit also needs to be given to the casting of the film. The merciless police officers, Nishad- the rebel Dalit representative and Gaura (Sayani Gupta) with her vigour nailed to perfection makes the movie a must-watch. The lead cast, Ayushmann Khurranna, lives up to the expectation and makes the audience fall in love with his performance.

Despite the fact that the movie is centered around a sensitive topic, the director has shot the movie aesthetically and kept the language temperate, keeping in mind it’s viewership. The film gives a strong message to the audience along with a dose of entertainment. It’s definitely a must watch film, which you can watch with either your family or friends.
